Manganese compounds are abundant in nature and have been used since the Stone Age as pigments for cave paintings. Glassmakers in ancient Greece and Rome used manganese in glassmaking. Today, manganese is primarily used as a metallurgical alloy and is mined in South Africa, Australia, China, Gabon and Brazil.
